In spite of decades of attempts to alleviate poverty in Rochester, not only has chronic poverty persisted, but Rochester continues to rank high in poverty across the nation. This project aims to decentralize services by bringing them back to the neighborhood to create an agile, responsive services system, build resident capacity to problem-solve, and meet community needs. The Neighborhood Collaborative Project (NCP) is led by three anchor neighborhood community centers in NE, NW, and SW Rochester. These anchor agencies collaborate to provide services such as basic needs distribution, benefits acquisition, vocational services, and eviction prevention. SWAN at Montgomery Center, Cameron Community, and the Father Tracy Advocacy Center serve as anchors while Beyond the Sanctuary, The People’s Pantry, ABC’s Action Front Center, Lyell Ave Business Association, Baden Street Counseling Center, Barakah Muslim Charity, MC Collaborative, C3 Consultancy Services, and On The Ground Research, will partner to provide additional services including a robust vocational program, case management and crisis services, and ongoing technical assistance and evaluation. This collaborative will coordinate services and resources to improve individuals’ and families’ livelihoods and, in time, improve neighborhood conditions.
The NCP has four major components: (1) weekly walking outreach in each neighborhood, (2) weekly corner canopy events held in vacant city lots in each neighborhood, (3) expanding service provision at the brick-and-mortar locations, and (4) creating a services platform to accomplish this work. This service platform can quickly add, or subtract, services as dictated by the residents.
Our goals are threefold: Develop and implement an agile, responsive, sustainable services platform at the neighborhood level; Increase neighborhood capacity to address issues important to community; and Improve neighborhood conditions.
